Quick explanation

The constitution of the Federal Republic is called the Basic Law.

Why is this correct?

Terms such as federal constitution or constitutional treaty are not its official name.

Background

The constitution of the Federal Republic is called the Basic Law (Grundgesetz). It sets out the fundamental rights (Articles 1 to 19), the principles of the state such as democracy, the rule of law and federalism, and the tasks of the constitutional bodies, for example the Bundestag, the Bundesrat and the Federal President. All other laws must be compatible with the Basic Law. In case of dispute, the Federal Constitutional Court in Karlsruhe decides. The Basic Law can only be amended with two-thirds majorities in both the Bundestag and the Bundesrat.

Why are the other answers wrong?

“Federal Constitution” (Bundesverfassung) is the name of Switzerland’s constitution, not Germany’s. A code (Gesetzbuch) is a collection of laws on one area of law, for example the Civil Code (BGB) or the Criminal Code (StGB). “Constitutional Treaty” was the name of a planned EU treaty that failed in 2005.

Memory tip

This question is almost the same as question 6 – the answer is always Grundgesetz (Basic Law).
