Quick explanation
Article 1 protects the inviolability of human dignity.
Why is this correct?
Human dignity appears at the beginning of the Basic Law and binds all public authority to respect and protect it.
Background
Article 1(1) is the most important sentence of the Basic Law: “Human dignity shall be inviolable. To respect and protect it shall be the duty of all state authority.” Every person has dignity, regardless of origin, religion or nationality. After the crimes of National Socialism, this sentence was deliberately placed at the very beginning. Under the eternity clause (Article 79(3)), Article 1 may never be changed.
Why are the other answers wrong?
The other rights are also fundamental rights, but they are in other articles: the right to life in Article 2, freedom of religion in Article 4 and freedom of expression in Article 5.
Memory tip
Article 1 – the first and most important: human dignity.
