Quick explanation
People wear colourful costumes and masks on Rose Monday (Rosenmontag).
Why is this correct?
Rose Monday is the highlight of the carnival season, also called Fastnacht or Fasching.
Background
Carnival is celebrated above all in the Rhineland, in Mainz and in southern Germany, and depending on the region it is also called Fastnacht or Fasching. The “fifth season” traditionally begins on 11 November at 11:11 am; it reaches its peak in the week before Ash Wednesday. On Rose Monday, large parades with floats move through cities such as Cologne, Düsseldorf and Mainz, people are in costume and sweets are thrown into the crowd. Ash Wednesday marks the start of the Christian season of Lent before Easter.
Why are the other answers wrong?
On 1 May, Labour Day, there are rallies and May festivals. At the Oktoberfest in Munich, many people wear traditional dress such as dirndls and lederhosen, but no masks. Pentecost is a Christian festival 50 days after Easter.
Memory tip
Rose Monday = carnival = costumes.
