Quick explanation

Germany’s special responsibility towards Israel stems from the National Socialist crimes against Jews.

Why is this correct?

Because of the Holocaust, Germany bears a special historical responsibility towards Jews and the State of Israel.

Background

The National Socialists murdered around six million European Jews. After the war, the Federal Republic concluded the Luxembourg Agreement with Israel on compensation payments in 1952; in 1965 the two states established diplomatic relations. In 2008, Chancellor Angela Merkel declared before the Israeli parliament that Israel’s security is part of Germany’s reason of state. This responsibility also includes fighting antisemitism in Germany.

Why are the other answers wrong?

EU membership, the Basic Law or Christian tradition are not the reason. The Basic Law does not mention Israel; the responsibility comes from history.
