Quick explanation

Religious tolerance means: everyone can believe what they want.

Why is this correct?

Freedom of faith under Article 4 of the Basic Law protects every religion and also the right to have no religion.

Background

Christians, Muslims, Jews, Buddhists, Hindus, members of other religions and many people without a religion live together in Germany. Religious tolerance means respecting other people’s faith, even if you do not share it yourself. The state remains neutral and does not favour any religion. The limit is reached where laws are broken or violence is done to others in the name of a religion.

Why are the other answers wrong?

Mosques may be built – that is part of freedom of religion, and there are many mosques in Germany. Not everyone believes in God; that is allowed too. And the state does not tell anyone what to believe.

Memory tip

Tolerance = everyone believes what they want – and respects others.
