Quick explanation
Usually a member of the largest parliamentary group becomes President of the Bundestag.
Why is this correct?
This is a parliamentary tradition: the largest group nominates the President.
Background
The President of the Bundestag chairs the sessions of parliament, represents the Bundestag and exercises authority over the building. The President is elected by the members at the start of each legislative term. By long tradition, the largest parliamentary group nominates someone from its own ranks. Julia Klöckner (CDU) has been President of the Bundestag since 2025.
Why are the other answers wrong?
The first session is opened by the “Father of the House” (Alterspräsident) – today the member with the longest service in the Bundestag. But they only chair the session until the President is elected. State Minister-Presidents are not members of the Bundestag, and former chancellors traditionally do not become President of the Bundestag.
Memory tip
Largest group → usually provides both the Chancellor and the President of the Bundestag.
