Quick explanation
The two largest parliamentary groups in the Bundestag are currently the CDU/CSU and the AfD.
Why is this correct?
After the 2025 federal election, the CDU/CSU has the most members and the AfD the second most.
Background
A parliamentary group (Fraktion) is the association of a party’s members in the Bundestag (or of two allied parties such as the CDU and CSU). In the federal election in February 2025, the Union of CDU and CSU became the strongest force and the AfD the second strongest. They are followed by the SPD, Alliance 90/The Greens and The Left. The CDU/CSU and SPD govern, which makes the AfD the largest opposition group.
Why are the other answers wrong?
The Left and the Greens are the smallest groups in the current Bundestag. The SPD is the third-largest force and the Union’s coalition partner. The combination “The Left and CDU/CSU” is also wrong.
Memory tip
As of the 2025 federal election: 1st CDU/CSU, 2nd AfD. This may change after the next election.
