Quick explanation
The EU has 27 member states today.
Why is this correct?
There have been 27 since the United Kingdom left on 31 January 2020.
Background
The European Community began in 1957 with six states. More joined over time; the biggest enlargement was in 2004 with ten new countries, and the most recent member was Croatia in 2013 as the 28th state. With Brexit, the United Kingdom became the first country to leave the EU. Several countries, such as those in the Western Balkans as well as Ukraine and Moldova, are candidates for membership.
Why are the other answers wrong?
21, 23 and 25 are wrong. The EU had 25 members from 2004 to 2007, before Bulgaria and Romania joined.
Memory tip
EU today: 27 (after Brexit).
