Quick explanation

The Treaties of Rome founded the European Economic Community (EEC).

Why is this correct?

The treaties were signed in Rome on 25 March 1957 and are regarded as the birth of today’s EU.

Background

In 1957, Belgium, the Federal Republic of Germany, France, Italy, Luxembourg and the Netherlands signed two treaties in Rome: one founded the European Economic Community with the goal of a common market, the other the European Atomic Energy Community (Euratom). The treaties entered into force in 1958. Customs duties between the members were gradually abolished. In 2007, the EU celebrated the 50th anniversary with the “Berlin Declaration”.

Why are the other answers wrong?

The Federal Republic joined NATO in 1955 – this was arranged by the Paris Agreements. Reparations and the Oder–Neisse border were not part of the Treaties of Rome; united Germany finally recognised the Oder–Neisse border in 1990.

Memory tip

Rome 1957 = EEC = the beginning of the EU.
