Quick explanation

In Germany you come of age at 18.

Why is this correct?

At 18 you have full legal capacity and all the rights and duties of an adult.

Background

Being of age means, for example, that you can sign contracts, rent a flat, marry, drive a car alone with a licence and vote in federal elections without your parents’ consent. But you are also fully responsible yourself, for instance for debts. The age of majority in Germany has been 18 since 1975; before that it was 21. Young people between 14 and 18 already have some rights, for example choosing their religion from 14.

Why are the other answers wrong?

16 is, for example, the age for a moped licence or, in some states, for local and state elections, but not the age of majority. 19 has no special role, and 21 was the age of majority only until 1975.

Memory tip

18 = of age.
