Quick explanation

Anyone who hits a child can be punished for it.

Why is this correct?

In Germany, children have a right to an upbringing free of violence; hitting is forbidden.

Background

Since 2000, the Civil Code has stated: “Children have a right to an upbringing free of violence. Corporal punishment, psychological injury and other degrading measures are inadmissible” (Section 1631 BGB). Anyone who hits a child can be prosecuted for bodily harm. This also applies to parents. The youth welfare office can intervene and support the family; if a child is in danger, it can also take the child into temporary care.

Why are the other answers wrong?

Violence against children is not a private family matter. Neighbours, teachers or doctors can and should contact the youth welfare office if they are worried. It is wrong that you cannot be punished for it.

Memory tip

Hitting children = forbidden and punishable.
