Quick explanation
In Germany, you may only be married to one person at a time.
Why is this correct?
Being married to two people (bigamy) is forbidden and a criminal offence.
Background
German marriage law only recognises marriage between two people. Anyone who is already married and marries again commits a criminal offence under Section 172 of the Criminal Code; the second marriage can also be annulled. Since 2017, two men or two women may also marry. Germany generally does not recognise polygamous marriages concluded abroad as equivalent marriages either.
Why are the other answers wrong?
Several spouses at the same time are forbidden. After a divorce or the death of a spouse, you may of course marry again – this applies equally to women and men.
Memory tip
One marriage = two people.
