Quick explanation
Pentecost (Pfingsten) is a Christian holiday.
Why is this correct?
Pentecost is celebrated 50 days after Easter; Whit Monday is a public holiday.
Background
At Pentecost, Christians remember that, according to the Bible, the Holy Spirit descended on the apostles. The festival is therefore also seen as the “birthday of the Church”. The name comes from the Greek word for “the fiftieth (day)”. Whit Sunday and Whit Monday usually fall in May or June. In some federal states there are also school holidays around this time, the Whitsun holidays.
Why are the other answers wrong?
Pentecost is not a state day of remembrance like 27 January, not an international day of mourning and not a purely Bavarian custom – it is celebrated throughout Germany, even though Bavaria has particularly long Whitsun holidays.
Memory tip
Easter + 50 days = Pentecost.
