Quick explanation
European and German culture has been shaped above all by Christianity.
Why is this correct?
For more than a thousand years, Christianity has influenced holidays, art, architecture, values and everyday life in Europe.
Background
Many traces of Christianity are still visible today: churches and cathedrals in almost every town, holidays such as Christmas, Easter and Pentecost, Sunday as a day off and the calendar counted from the birth of Christ. Music, painting and literature were also strongly influenced by Christian themes. Alongside this, Judaism, ancient philosophy and the Enlightenment shaped European culture. Today just under half of the people in Germany belong to one of the two major Christian churches; around five million Muslims live here.
Why are the other answers wrong?
Hinduism and Buddhism come from Asia and have comparatively few followers in Germany. Islam is now the second-largest religion in Germany, but has not shaped European culture as fundamentally as Christianity.
Memory tip
Churches, Christmas, Sunday = Christian influence.
