Quick explanation
Most migrants in Germany came from Turkey.
Why is this correct?
People with Turkish roots form the largest group with an immigration history in Germany.
Background
After the recruitment agreement of 1961, many people came to Germany from Turkey as “guest workers”. Later their families followed, and many stayed permanently. Today almost three million people with Turkish roots live in Germany, many of them in the third or fourth generation and with a German passport. Other large groups come from Poland, Russia, Kazakhstan, Romania, Italy, Syria and – since 2022 – Ukraine.
Why are the other answers wrong?
Many people also immigrated from Italy and Poland, but fewer than from Turkey. There was a recruitment agreement with Morocco from 1963, but the number of immigrants is much smaller.
Memory tip
Largest group: people with Turkish roots.
