Quick explanation
Migrants in the GDR came mainly from Vietnam, Poland and Mozambique.
Why is this correct?
The GDR brought so-called contract workers into the country from other socialist states.
Background
Like the Federal Republic, the GDR needed workers. It concluded agreements with socialist “brother states”, above all with Vietnam, Mozambique, Poland, Cuba and Angola. The largest group came from Vietnam: in 1989 around 60,000 Vietnamese contract workers lived in the GDR. They usually lived in separate hostels, had little contact with the population and were generally not allowed to bring their families. After reunification, many Vietnamese stayed in Germany.
Why are the other answers wrong?
France, Mexico and Somalia were not among the contract workers’ countries of origin. There was no comparably large recruitment from Hungary, Chile, Zimbabwe, North Korea, Romania or Egypt.
Memory tip
GDR contract workers: Vietnam (largest group), Mozambique, Poland.
