Quick explanation
The first guest workers came from Italy.
Why is this correct?
The Federal Republic concluded its first recruitment agreement with Italy in 1955.
Background
On 20 December 1955, the Federal Republic and Italy signed the first agreement on recruiting workers. Many Italians initially worked in agriculture and later in industry, for example in car manufacturing. Agreements followed with Spain and Greece (1960), Turkey (1961), Morocco (1963), Portugal (1964), Tunisia (1965) and Yugoslavia (1968). Thanks to immigration, Italian food – pizza, pasta, espresso – became popular throughout Germany.
Why are the other answers wrong?
Spain, Portugal and Turkey only followed a few years later: Spain in 1960, Turkey in 1961 and Portugal in 1964.
Memory tip
1955 Italy first – then Spain, Greece, Turkey …
