Quick explanation
The foreign workers recruited in the 1950s and 1960s were called “guest workers” (Gastarbeiter).
Why is this correct?
The name shows that people assumed at the time they would only stay for a while.
Background
During the economic miracle, the Federal Republic lacked workers, especially in industry, mining and construction. That is why from 1955 it concluded recruitment agreements with Italy, Spain, Greece, Turkey, Morocco, Portugal, Tunisia and Yugoslavia. In 1964 the one-millionth guest worker, the Portuguese Armando Rodrigues de Sá, was welcomed in Cologne with a moped. In 1973 the Federal Republic stopped recruitment. Many guest workers stayed, brought their families and still help shape Germany today.
Why are the other answers wrong?
Undeclared workers (Schwarzarbeiter) work illegally without paying taxes and social contributions. Temporary agency workers are hired out by one company to others. Shift workers work in changing shifts, for example at night – this says nothing about their origin.
Memory tip
Recruitment 1955–1973 = guest workers.
