Quick explanation

The national anthem begins with “Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit”.

Why is this correct?

The national anthem is the third verse of the “Song of the Germans” by Hoffmann von Fallersleben.

Background

The German national anthem is the third verse of the “Song of the Germans” (Lied der Deutschen). The lyrics were written by August Heinrich Hoffmann von Fallersleben in 1841, and the melody is by Joseph Haydn. Since 1991, only the third verse has officially been the national anthem. It begins with the words “Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit für das deutsche Vaterland” (Unity and justice and freedom for the German fatherland).

Why are the other answers wrong?

“Völker, hört die Signale” comes from “The Internationale”, a song of the labour movement. “Freude schöner Götterfunken” is the beginning of Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy”, the European anthem. “Deutschland einig Vaterland” is a line from the national anthem of the GDR.

Memory tip

Unity, justice, freedom – these words are also on the edge of the German 2-euro coin.
