Quick explanation
Germany’s current head of state is Frank-Walter Steinmeier.
Why is this correct?
Frank-Walter Steinmeier has been Federal President since 2017 and was re-elected in 2022.
Background
In Germany, the head of state is the Federal President. Frank-Walter Steinmeier (SPD) was elected by the Federal Convention in 2017 and confirmed for a second term in 2022. He previously served, among other things, as foreign minister. The Federal President’s role is mainly representative: he represents Germany abroad, signs laws and appoints the Chancellor and the ministers. A term lasts five years; only one re-election is possible.
Why are the other answers wrong?
Joachim Gauck was Federal President from 2012 to 2017, i.e. Steinmeier’s predecessor. Bärbel Bas was President of the Bundestag from 2021 to 2025 and has been Federal Minister of Labour and Social Affairs since 2025. Bodo Ramelow was Minister-President of Thuringia.
