Quick explanation
CDU stands for Christian Democratic Union (Christlich Demokratische Union).
Why is this correct?
The CDU is one of Germany’s major parties and was founded in 1945.
Background
The Christian Democratic Union (CDU) was founded after the Second World War. It aimed to bring Catholic and Protestant Christians together in a party of the centre. The CDU has provided many federal chancellors: Konrad Adenauer, Ludwig Erhard, Kurt Georg Kiesinger, Helmut Kohl, Angela Merkel and, since 2025, Friedrich Merz. The CDU does not run in Bavaria – its sister party, the CSU, runs there. In the Bundestag, the CDU and CSU form a joint parliamentary group, known as the “Union”.
Why are the other answers wrong?
“Christian German Union” sounds similar, but the D stands for “Democratic”, not “German”. A “Club of German Entrepreneurs” and a “Christian German Environmental Protection” are invented answers.
Memory tip
