Quick explanation

The German Federal Chancellor is elected by the Bundestag.

Why is this correct?

This is the same question as question 81: the vote takes place in the Bundestag, on the proposal of the Federal President (Article 63).

Background

After a federal election, the parties negotiate a coalition. Once they have agreed, the Federal President proposes a person to the Bundestag – usually the lead candidate of the strongest party. If that person receives a majority of the votes of all members, the Federal President appoints them Chancellor. The Bundestag can also remove the Chancellor – but only by electing a successor at the same time (constructive vote of no confidence, Article 67).

Why are the other answers wrong?

The people only elect the Bundestag. The Federal Convention elects the Federal President. The federal government is only formed by the Chancellor – so it cannot elect the Chancellor.

Memory tip

The Bundestag elects the Chancellor – and can only remove them by electing a successor.
