Asyl

Quick explanation
The constitutional right of asylum concerns foreign nationals facing political persecution.
Why is this correct?
Human dignity and the freedoms of family and expression apply generally, while asylum concerns protection for persecuted foreigners.
Background
Article 16a of the Basic Law states: “Persons persecuted on political grounds shall have the right of asylum.” Asylum protects people who are persecuted in their country of origin because of their political opinion, religion or origin. Germans do not need this protection in Germany – that is why the right of asylum only applies to foreigners. In practice, many refugees also receive protection under the Geneva Refugee Convention.
Why are the other answers wrong?
Human dignity (Article 1), protection of the family (Article 6) and freedom of expression (Article 5) are human rights: they apply to everyone in Germany, whatever their nationality. Conversely, some rights apply only to Germans, for example freedom of assembly under Article 8.
Memory tip
Asylum is protection from persecution in your home country – only people from other countries need it.
