Quick explanation
Cash payments in euros have been made in Germany since 2002.
Why is this correct?
On 1 January 2002, euro banknotes and coins were introduced and replaced the Deutsche Mark.
Background
As book money, for example for bank transfers, the euro had already existed since 1 January 1999. Cash followed three years later. The exchange rate was fixed: 1 euro equalled 1.95583 Deutsche Marks. That is why many people kept “dividing by two” for a long time. Deutsche Mark notes and coins can still be exchanged at the Deutsche Bundesbank with no time limit.
Why are the other answers wrong?
In 1995 and 1998 the euro did not yet exist as cash; in 1995, however, the name “euro” was decided. By 2005, people had already been paying with euros for three years.
Memory tip
1999 book money – 2002 cash.
