Quick explanation
To receive parental allowance (Elterngeld), Ms Seger must submit an application to the parental allowance office.
Why is this correct?
Parental allowance is only paid on application; the parental allowance office of the federal state or municipality is responsible.
Background
Parental allowance replaces part of income when parents work less or not at all after the birth in order to look after their child. It usually amounts to 65 to 67 percent of previous net income, at least 300 and at most 1,800 euros a month. Parents can receive it for up to 14 months together. You apply after the birth, in many states also online. Important: parental allowance is only paid retroactively for three months – so you should not apply too late.
Why are the other answers wrong?
During maternity protection, the health insurance fund pays maternity benefit, but not parental allowance. Parental allowance is not paid automatically. And the employment office does not have to give permission – parental leave is requested from the employer.
Memory tip
Parental allowance = apply to the parental allowance office, not too late.
