Quick explanation

The Federal Republic joined other states to form the European Economic Community through the Treaties of Rome.

Why is this correct?

The Treaties of Rome of 1957 founded the EEC and Euratom.

Background

The Treaties of Rome were a major step in European unification: instead of only cooperating on coal and steel, the six founding states created a common market for all goods. The EEC later became the European Community (EC) and in 1993, with the Maastricht Treaty, the European Union. Federal Chancellor Konrad Adenauer signed the treaties for the Federal Republic. See also question 237.

Why are the other answers wrong?

“Paris Treaties” is a trap: the Coal and Steel Community was founded in Paris in 1951, and the Paris Agreements of 1954 arranged the Federal Republic’s accession to NATO – but the EEC was founded in Rome. “Hamburg” and “London Treaties” have nothing to do with the EEC.

Memory tip

EEC = Rome (1957). Coal and steel = Paris (1951).
