#244Welchen Schulabschluss braucht man normalerweise, um an einer Universität in Deutschland ein Studium zu beginnen?
What school qualification do you usually need to start studying at a university in Germany?
Quick Controls
The correct answer is:
the high school diploma (Abitur)
das Abitur
Independent study resource, not a BAMF website. Translations are study aids; the exam is in German.
Quick explanation
To start studying at a university, you normally need the Abitur.
Why is this correct?
The Abitur is the general higher education entrance qualification and entitles you to study at all universities.
Background
The Abitur is usually taken after 12 or 13 years of school at a grammar school (Gymnasium) or comprehensive school. But there are other routes to higher education: with the Fachhochschulreife you can study at universities of applied sciences, and people with vocational qualifications – for example a master craftsman’s certificate or after training and work experience – can also begin a degree. Foreign school qualifications are assessed and may be recognised.
Why are the other answers wrong?
A Diplom is a university degree you receive at the end of your studies, not before. Prokura is a commercial power of attorney for company employees. The journeyman’s examination (Gesellenprüfung) completes an apprenticeship in a skilled trade.
Memory tip
Abitur → university.
