Quick explanation

A free election allows a choice without coercion or disadvantage.

Why is this correct?

Voters must make their own decision and may not be forced or improperly influenced to cast a particular vote.

Background

For federal elections, the Basic Law sets out five electoral principles: general, direct, free, equal and secret (Article 38). “Free” means that nobody may pressure, bribe or threaten voters, and nobody may suffer disadvantages because of their vote. A free election also means that you do not have to vote at all.

Why are the other answers wrong?

Accepting money for a particular vote is vote buying and a criminal offence. People who have been or are in prison are usually allowed to vote as well – only a court can take away the right to vote, and only in rare cases. Germany has no compulsory voting, unlike Belgium, for example.
