Quick explanation
The largest Jewish communities in Germany are in Berlin and Munich.
Why is this correct?
Each of these cities has several thousand members of Jewish communities.
Background
Today around 90,000 people in Germany are members of a Jewish community; many came from the former Soviet Union after 1990. The largest communities are the Jewish Community of Berlin and the Israelite Religious Community of Munich and Upper Bavaria. Munich has had the large Ohel Jakob Synagogue in the city centre since 2006, and Berlin has the New Synagogue with its golden dome.
Why are the other answers wrong?
Hamburg, Essen, Nuremberg and Stuttgart also have Jewish communities, but smaller ones. Worms and Speyer are a trap: together with Mainz they were the most important Jewish centres in the Middle Ages (the “ShUM cities”, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site), but today they have only small communities.
Memory tip
Germany’s largest cities, Berlin and Munich, also have the largest communities.
