Quick explanation
If you receive an incorrect bill from an authority, you file an objection (Widerspruch) with the authority.
Why is this correct?
The objection must usually be filed within one month of receiving the notice.
Background
Bills or fee notices from authorities, for example for waste collection fees or a parking offence, are administrative acts. At the end of the notice there is information on legal remedies explaining how and by when you can challenge it. You usually file a written objection and explain why the bill is wrong. The authority must then review the case again. If it does not uphold the objection, you can go to the administrative court. For tax assessments, the remedy is called “Einspruch” (see question 280).
Why are the other answers wrong?
Anyone who simply ignores the bill or sends it back risks reminder fees and enforcement, because the notice becomes binding once the deadline has passed. The tax office is not responsible for other authorities’ bills.
Memory tip
Wrong notice → objection within one month.
